“Two days into the internship (fancy way of saying free labor), and I am doing real work and have decided I’d rather be in school all my life. #TheRealLivesofAUSInterns”
That’s right. It was said. Never did I think I would publicly claim to rather be in school all my life, but it happened. My first days at my internship were hellish for lack of a better word and by that I mean I had to do actual work…like work-work. (Wow I’m really lacking in the diction department aren’t I?) I worked from 10 till 5:30 and had no lunch break in between. I DIDN’T EVEN GO TO THE BATHROOM. And those who know me will see why this feat is worth all caps.
So yeah, if you’re under the impression that all interns have to do is get coffee, make photocopies and look corporate, then you are mistaken. (Don’t get me wrong by no means do I intend to demerit getting coffee or looking corporate chic—they are daunting tasks on their own).
But the truth is, I am typing this up in a pair of jeans and dangling boom-box earrings, after compiling a list of 350+ service providers on Sheikh Zayed and their phone numbers for a publication that is due by the end of this week.
My advice to you is DON’T GO WITH ANY EXPECTATIONS!
And pack a poptart.

my internship was actually more difficult than any of my real jobs and I’m totally with you on the fetching coffee part – I never did it but there were other things I never thought I’d be doing in an internship.
no expectations, precisely. Life is better off that way.
